Voice changes the rhythm of an AI companion conversation. Instead of composing every message, you can talk naturally, hear the character respond in real time, and let the conversation move more like a call.
We support real-time voice calls with characters, and you can also hear spoken responses while staying in text chat. Because MyBot is a web app, you can use voice from a modern browser on your phone without installing a native app.
If you are trying MyBot voice chat for the first time, or simply want your calls to feel smoother, these eight tips are a good place to start.
1. Choose the voice for the character, not just the voice you like most
A voice can change how a character comes across more than you might expect. A character written as calm and understated can feel completely different with a highly energetic voice.
You can choose a character's voice during customization. The voice picker was expanded in October 2025, with male and female voices separated and options organized by accent to make them easier to browse.
Before a longer call, try a few options and ask a simple question with each. Listen for whether the pacing, accent, and overall delivery fit the personality you created.
If you are creating a character, think about voice and personality together rather than treating voice as a finishing touch.

2. Start with a simple conversational opener
Voice works best when you give the conversation somewhere obvious to go.
You do not need a complicated prompt. Try opening with something concrete:
- "I just got home. Want to hear how my day went?"
- "Help me practice ordering dinner in Japanese."
- "I have an idea for a story and want to talk it through."
- "Can we pick up where we left off yesterday?"
A specific opener gives the character immediate context and usually produces a more useful first response than simply saying hello and waiting for the conversation to find a direction.
3. Talk in turns instead of trying to perfect every sentence
A voice call does not need to sound like a written prompt.
Speak the way you normally would. Short sentences, corrections, pauses, and changing your mind midway through a thought are part of conversation. If you are trying to pack five separate instructions into one turn, split them up.
This is especially useful for open-ended uses such as brainstorming, casual conversation, language practice, or roleplay. Give the character one idea to respond to, listen to the answer, and build from there.
For tasks where exact wording matters, text may still be the better format. You do not have to force every interaction into voice.
4. Use the live captions when listening is difficult
We added closed-caption-style narration to voice calls in our August 2025 update, so you can read along while the conversation unfolds.
Captions can be useful when you are somewhere noisy, when an unfamiliar accent makes a phrase hard to catch, or when you simply prefer having visual context while listening.
They also make voice less all-or-nothing. You can listen most of the time and glance at the text when you miss something instead of abandoning the call.
5. Switch between voice and text when the conversation changes
Some conversations naturally move between formats.
You might talk through an idea on a call, then want to type a detailed list. Or you might begin a roleplay in text and switch to voice once the scene becomes more conversational.
Our August 2025 update improved switching between text and voice without disconnecting the conversation.
Use that flexibility. Voice is useful for immediacy. Text is useful when you want precision, need to reread something, or are entering information that is easier to type.
You can start by talking through an idea, then switch to text when you want to save a precise list or reread the details.

6. Check the transcript after the call
Closing the call does not mean losing the conversation.
After you close a call, the voice conversation is shown in text form in the main thread. If the newest history does not appear immediately, refreshing the page should display it.
That makes the transcript useful for more than reviewing what was said. You can continue the same conversation in text, return to an idea later, or use the previous exchange as context before your next call.
If something in the conversation matters to you, it is worth checking the thread rather than relying on your memory of the call.
7. On mobile, treat MyBot like a browser app
MyBot does not currently have a native iOS or Android app. It runs as a web app through modern mobile browsers.
That means the basic mobile voice setup is simple:
- Open MyBot in your phone's browser.
- Sign in and open the character you want to talk with.
- Start the voice experience from the character chat.
- Make sure your browser has microphone permission if prompted.
- If audio behaves unexpectedly, first check the browser's microphone and audio permissions before changing the character itself.
Our August 2025 update also improved audio consistency on iOS.
For the smoothest experience, a stable connection and a relatively quiet environment will also make any real-time voice conversation easier to follow.
8. Use voice when voice actually improves the interaction
Voice is not automatically better than text. It is better for certain kinds of interactions.
Consider voice when you want:
- a casual back-and-forth conversation
- language speaking practice
- brainstorming without stopping to type
- a character interaction where hearing the personality matters
- a more immediate roleplay or storytelling scene
Text may be better for long instructions, detailed editing, information you need to scan carefully, or situations where speaking aloud is inconvenient.
We support both, so there is no reason to pick one permanently. Use whichever mode makes the current conversation easier.
A quick voice-call checklist
Before your next call, check four things:
- Voice: Does the selected voice fit the character?
- Environment: Can your microphone pick you up clearly?
- Format: Would this particular conversation be easier to talk through than type?
- Captions: Would reading along make the call easier to follow?
Then start simple. You can always move into a deeper conversation once the rhythm feels natural.
